In the winter: Just 6km from the hotel Sonata is the winter resort of Borovets. Over 45 kilometers of diverse ski slopes offering all degrees of difficulty that attract thousands of winter sports fans from Bulgaria and also from abroad. Many facilities (ski lifts, baby vlekcheta, chair lifts) take you to the mountain above Borovets with its spectacular views. But most impressive is the cabin lift to the Yastrebets peak (2363 m), with a capacity of 1200 people per hour. The slopes of Yastrebets hold all the major ski races, including those for the World Cup Alpine skiing.

In the summer: There are various walks on Rila mountain for both enthusiasts and really skilled climbers.

- A visit up to the seven Rila lakes – doesn’t involve any difficult walking, but guarantees you taking possibly the best photos of your lifetime.

- Climb the Mussala peak (2925m) – the highest on the Balkan Peninsula and Eastern Europe

- Trips to Rila Monastery (100kms away) or Plovdiv (126kms away).

- The chance to check your riding skills with two options to choose from - both only a few kilometers away.

- Close by, there are 2 Golf courses offering full facilities to both beginners and professionals alike.

- There is an open air mineral water swimming pool in near by Belchin with a small cafeteria and decent restaurant in the grounds. What is more this little complex offers the best views to the snowy peaks of Rila mountain and is usually open from mid June to mid September.

- Take motor boat trips or go fishing on the nearby Iskar lake, which is the biggest man made lake in the Balkans and the second biggest area covered by water after the famous Ohrid lake in neighboring Macedonia (FYROM).

- Visit the Avala game reserve famous for its wild animals and fishing. If interested you may bring your own sports weapon, but do check with the hotel if shooting is allowed during the days you plan to be there.

- Or why not go for a barbeque in the wild, where you and your kids can do your own thing, whilst enjoying a full day out.

- For the petrol heads, in July there is the spectacle of the Rally Bulgaria, racing through the streets of Samokov and Borovets and mountain trails in the surrounding areas.
